34 years of "Natura 2000": A celebration of nature in Bulgaria
On May 21, Europe celebrates "Natura 2000" Day – the network of protected areas that safeguards the most precious natural treasures of the Old Continent. This year, the initiative is accompanied by a series of events organized by the Ministry of Environment and Water (MOEW), the Regional Inspectorates of Environment and Water (RIEW), and nature conservation organizations.
"Nature needs us" – this is the motto for numerous educational and environmental initiatives taking place across the country.
Where and how to get involved?
- Burgas: A fashion show featuring costumes made from recycled materials at a kindergarten.
- Veliko Tarnovo: An educational seminar at Veliko Tarnovo University on the ecological network and natural disasters.
- Ruse: An eco-lecture titled "The Return of the Beaver to Our Lands" and a creative art workshop.
- Rhodopes: A youth tour in the "Rhodopes - Central" and "Dobrostan" protected areas.
Biodiversity and the future
The celebration also coincides with preparations for the International Day for Biological Diversity on May 22. Until May 25, Bulgaria is also participating in the major European initiative BioBlitz 2026, which allows citizens to get an up-close look at the beauty of protected areas.
The full list of events by city can be found on the official website of the Ministry of Environment and Water.
