An official working visit by the European Commissioner for Agriculture and Food, Christophe Hansen, is planned for October 9 and 10 in Bulgaria. The information was announced during a specially organized press conference by the Minister of Agriculture Georgi Takhov.

The main purpose of the visit is to hold an in-depth discussion on the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) for the upcoming programming period 2028-2034. Takhov emphasized the strategic importance of this meeting, expressing hope that it will contribute to achieving greater clarity and mutual understanding.

In the context of current geopolitical challenges, the minister highlighted that food security and rural development issues are among the priority topics for European leaders. According to him, the CAP is a key instrument that must maintain its two-pillar structure and provide balanced support.

Takhov firmly stated that Bulgaria will continue to insist on a strong, independent, and simplified agricultural policy. He emphasized the need to maintain a balance between the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of agriculture.

During the meeting, important issues related to direct payments and rural development will be discussed. The minister expressed the position that these areas should not be put at risk and must have a specially designated budget.

Among the highlights of the discussion will be support for young farmers and ensuring generational continuity. Takhov firmly opposed the proposal for national co-financing of interventions in the field of direct payments.

The visit of Commissioner Hansen is expected to give new impetus to the dialogue between Bulgaria and European institutions regarding the future of agriculture.
