A joint study by conservation organizations documented significant ecological progress along the cross-border section between Bulgaria and Greece. Experts from WWF Bulgaria and the Greek organization Callisto conducted a large-scale observation using modern photographic technology, which revealed extremely important results about wild animal migration patterns.
By deploying 11 specialized cameras – 6 on Greek and 5 on Bulgarian territory – the research team documented a total of 511 crossings of large mammals through a specially constructed ecological overpass at the Ilinden–Exochi border checkpoint. The registered species include brown bear, wolf, wild boar, and deer, which confirms the effectiveness of the infrastructure solution.
Alexander Dutsov from WWF Bulgaria emphasizes the critical importance of such facilities for ensuring ecological connectivity. They not only guarantee safe movement but also create conditions for natural population exchange, food resources, and breeding opportunities.
The innovative project is viewed as a potential model for future European initiatives. Similar infrastructure solutions have already been implemented in countries like Romania and Germany, demonstrating the growing interest in preserving biodiversity through modern technological approaches.
