Mysterious fish die-off in Varna Lake
A report of dead fish found near the village of Ezerovo has put Varna authorities on alert. Experts from the Basin Directorate and the Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water (RIEW) carried out an on-site inspection to determine the causes of the incident.
Initial analyses show critically low levels of dissolved oxygen in the water in the lake area.
What are the likely causes?
- Plankton bloom: Specialists suggest that an intense bloom may have led to oxygen depletion.
- Species composition: Mainly small specimens and bottom-dwelling fish are affected, which narrows the scope of the investigation.
- Lack of petroleum products: At the moment, initial samples rule out contamination with petroleum products.
The situation remains under observation. The full results of the water samples taken are expected to be ready in 3 to 4 days, at which point the cause of the environmental incident will be officially announced.
