A high-ranking US diplomat revealed essential details about delicate international negotiations related to a potential resolution of the conflict in Ukraine. Steve Whitcoff informed the media that during a meeting in Alaska, a principled agreement was reached to provide serious security guarantees to the Eastern European country.
According to the diplomatic representative's statement, the agreement provides for the US and European allies to offer a mechanism similar to Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty. This approach is viewed as an alternative to direct NATO membership, which has been categorically rejected by Moscow so far.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the proposal as "historic", with negotiations with US leadership scheduled for Monday. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has so far demonstrated a firm position against Ukraine's potential joining of the military alliance.
