The Dawn of a New Era: The Digital Euro Enters the Testing Phase
The European Central Bank (ECB) has taken a key step toward the future of payments by selecting 36 leading payment service providers for a large-scale pilot project of the digital euro. 19 central banks from the eurozone will also participate in the initiative.
"The strong market interest demonstrates the private sector's readiness to strengthen European payment infrastructure," said Piero Cipollone of the ECB.
What will be tested?
- Technical functionality: Use of a beta version of the digital wallet.
- Operational processes: Payments between individuals and to merchants.
- User experience: Online and offline transactions, including mobile solutions.
The project, which is expected to begin in the second half of 2027, will last for 12 months. Giants such as Deutsche Bank, Revolut, Adyen, Stripe, and UniCredit will participate in it. The tests will cover both everyday services such as cafes and restaurants, as well as e-commerce sectors.
