Regional authorities in Northeast Bulgaria have introduced heightened security measures after a series of reports about a black leopard spotted in the area of Shumen Plateau and Varna Region. The temporary crisis headquarters in Shumen held an emergency meeting to coordinate actions to secure the area.
Emil Gelov from the Regional Forestry Directorate-Shumen reported that four specialized teams will conduct joint patrols during the weekend. The patrols will be coordinated with the Ministry of Interior, with the main goal of ensuring maximum safety for the local population and visitors in the region.
Shumen Regional Governor Katya Ivanova emphasized that despite the increased attention, "Shumen Plateau" remains open, but citizens must be extremely cautious. In parallel, the United Children's Complex in Shumen decided to cancel the planned green school due to potential danger.
Meanwhile, the neighboring Varna Region is also on high alert. Local authorities are forming a coordination headquarters after receiving reports of the same animal's presence during nighttime hours. Experts are working to identify and track the predator.
The director of the Lovech zoo offered specific recommendations to citizens in case of a potential encounter with the black leopard. The main instruction is not to turn their back to the animal and remain calm, while simultaneously seeking an opportunity for safe distancing.
The upcoming car race in the Shumen Plateau area remains unchanged for now, but organizers are ready to take immediate action if the situation deteriorates. Local authorities call for increased vigilance and immediate reporting when the predator is spotted.
