Food Prices in Bulgaria: Vegetables and Fruit

The market price index for food in Bulgaria has increased slightly. Vegetable prices have decreased, while fruit prices show a mixed picture. DKsBT monitors prices and informs about market dynamics.

Fruit and vegetable prices fluctuate, according to data from the State Commission on Commodity Exchanges and Markets (SCCEM) for this week.

While most goods show a decrease, the Market Price Index (MPI), reflecting wholesale food prices in Bulgaria, shows a minimal, yet positive growth. It increased by 0.44 percent, reaching 2,260 points, compared to 2,250 points from the previous week. It is important to note that the MPI's base level of 1,000 points is from 2005, providing context for current fluctuations.

Vegetables

Among the vegetables monitored by SCCEM, a trend towards price reduction is observed. Only green peppers show growth _mdash_ by 1.25 percent to 1.94 leva per kilogram. In contrast, red peppers register the sharpest decline _mdash_ a full 12.14 percent, reaching a price of 2.20 leva per kilogram.

This is a clearly defined trend towards lower prices for a large part of the vegetables offered on the Bulgarian markets.

Fruits

In the fruit sector, the picture is more diverse. Peaches show the biggest price increase, with 9.06 percent to 3.95 leva per kilogram, while grapes show the biggest decrease _mdash_ 7.17 percent to 2.98 leva per kilogram. For other fruits, prices fluctuate minimally downwards: watermelons _mdash_ by 0.57 percent to 0.70 leva per kilogram, lemons _mdash_ by 0.09 percent to 4.47 leva per kilogram, and apples _mdash_ by 0.07 percent to 2.83 leva per kilogram. These slight changes show relative stability in the fruit market.
