Mayor Dimitar Nikolov and Deputy Mayor for Sports Manol Todorov met with two of Burgas' hopes in athletics. These are Dimitar Hristov and Nikola Petkov, who are preparing under the guidance of coach Ivan Todorov.

Dimitar Hristov (in the under 20 age group) achieved excellent results during the winter season. He won a silver medal in the 200m with a time of 22.14 seconds and a silver medal in the 400m with a result of 49.38 seconds.

Among the men, Hristov performed even stronger, becoming a champion in the 200m with a time of 21.77 seconds and winning a silver medal in the 400m with 48.99 seconds.

He also participated in the Balkan Games for men, where he was part of the 4x400m relay, which took 5th place with a time of 3:15.38 minutes. At the end of the season, Hristov recorded 48.75 seconds in the 400m – a result that puts him in sixth place in the all-time ranking of Bulgaria in this discipline.

Nikola Petkov competes in the under 18 age group and also had a strong winter season. He took first place at the “Academic” international tournament in the 200m with a personal best for the season – 22.65 seconds.

In the 60m hurdles, he finished in second place, with the more significant achievement being his time – 8.01 seconds, which is the fourth-best of all time in Bulgaria.

Both athletes are national team members and are preparing to meet the standards for participation in major championships. Nikola Petkov is aiming to participate in the European Championship in Rieti, Italy (16–19.07.2026), and Dimitar Hristov – in the World Championship in Oregon, USA (5–9.08.2026).

If they manage to meet the standards for participation, this will be a precedent in Burgas athletics – for the first time, athletes from the region will participate in these disciplines at a European and world championship.

All results were achieved in extremely high competition.
