Burgas to get uniform street signs with Latin-script names and QR codes

02.11.2026

Burgas council has asked the mayor to draw up a single standard for street signs. It will look for money for the first stage in the 2027 budget.

Burgas will replace its street signs in stages, using one standard, city councillors decided at a meeting on 27 October 2026. Councillor Stoyko Andreev brought the proposal.

Each new sign will show the street name in both Cyrillic and Latin letters, and the Latin spelling will follow the official transliteration rules. Every sign will also carry a QR code linking to an official city website with the history of the street in Bulgarian and English. The city will be able to update the text without changing the code.

Councillors told the mayor to organise the drafting and approval of the standard. It must set the same rules for design, size, materials, legibility, access, fitting and upkeep, depending on where a sign is placed.

Standard designs for street signs will have to follow the new standard. So will the chief architect when designing and placing signs under the Spatial Planning Act and the city's local regulation.

The mayor must give the council an analysis of how many signs are needed and roughly what they will cost. The estimate covers drafting the standard, design, production, fitting, the digital link, the history texts and upkeep afterwards. The analysis must also suggest which areas should come first and in what stages the signs will be replaced.

Using this analysis, the mayor will propose money for the first stage in the draft 2027 budget. Later stages will depend on funding being secured, until every street in the city is covered.

The decision itself does not provide any money or change the city's current budget.
