Burgas is set to host a landmark photographic exhibition titled "80 Years of UNICEF – HOPE for Every Child." The exhibition commemorates eight decades since the founding of the UN Children's Fund and will be on display outdoors in front of the NHK Cultural Center from September 1 to September 30. Admission is free for all members of the public who wish to view the photographs.
This traveling initiative follows the historical path of UNICEF and tells the stories of millions of children around the world whose lives have been transformed through the protection of their fundamental rights. The exhibition features a selection of over 50 photographs taken in Bulgaria and across the globe. These images serve as a testament not only to the hardships and deprivations faced by children, but also to their remarkable courage, resilience, and ability to keep the flame of hope alive in the face of conflict, poverty, discrimination, and social exclusion.
The organization’s roots trace back to 1946, immediately following the end of World War II, when the UN General Assembly initiated the creation of the International Children's Emergency Fund. The initial goal was to save the lives of those affected by the war, assist in the recovery of devastated societies, and provide a chance for a future to an entire generation. Eight decades later, this mission remains just as urgent.
Christina de Bruin, UNICEF Representative in Bulgaria, highlights the significance of the event:
- "Over these 80 years, millions of lives have been saved, and millions of children have received better opportunities for the future. But this exhibition is also a reminder that our work is not yet finished."
- She adds that in the face of global crises, ongoing conflicts, and growing uncertainty, even greater efforts are needed to ensure that every child has a full opportunity to learn, develop, and thrive.
A significant portion of the photographic narrative is dedicated to the organization’s long-standing work in Bulgaria. Over the past two decades, UNICEF has played a key role in the process of deinstitutionalization and the implementation of innovative care services, including foster care, mobile field teams, early childhood intervention, and reforms in inclusive education. The results achieved are significant:
- More than 17,000 families have received support through early childhood development services in maternal and child health centers.
- More than 5,000 children and parents who have experienced violence have found protection through specialized services such as the "Child Advocacy Centers" (Zona ZaKrila).
Beyond history and statistics, the exhibition serves as a gesture of gratitude to all the institutions, companies, municipalities, donors, and media partners who have supported UNICEF's mission over the years. The exhibition will remain open to the public in front of the NHK Cultural Center in Burgas until the end of September.
