Crisis in regional aviation: Airlines seek changes to compensation rules

A group of 35 smaller European airlines has sent an urgent letter to EU institutions requesting a review of the planned reforms to the EU261 passenger rights regulation. The carriers warn that the financial pressure has become unbearable.

"Conduct a full impact assessment in the new geopolitical situation and recognize the unique role of regional aviation," the airlines state in their official address.

Main points of contention:

Among the signatories of the letter are Air Serbia, SkyExpress, Luxair, and KLM Cityhopper. The sector fears that if overly strict financial burdens are imposed, many vital air connections between European regions could disappear completely.
