Borislav Sarafov Discussed Cooperation with European Partners at a Forum in The Hague

Acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov participated in a Consultative Forum in The Hague, where he discussed judicial cooperation in Europe and the international situation. He met with representatives of Eurojust, Hungary, and Spain.

Acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov confirmed the commitment of the Bulgarian prosecution to actively cooperate with European partners in connection with the current international situation and the challenges it poses to law enforcement authorities, the prosecution's press center reports. This happened during bilateral meetings within the framework of the 20th Consultative Forum in The Hague of the chief prosecutors and directors of public prosecution services of the EU countries, which was held at the Eurojust headquarters in The Hague, the announcement specifies.

Among the main topics of the event were discussions on strengthening and supporting judicial cooperation in Europe and internationally to deal with the increasingly complex and globalized criminal environment, including the networks of organized crime and emerging hybrid threats.

Within the framework of the forum, the Bulgarian Prosecutor General spoke with the President of Eurojust, Michael Schmidt, with whom they discussed issues of mutual interest, including the creation of joint investigation teams and specific cooperation on criminal cases, the prosecution informs. Borislav Sarafov confirmed the commitment of the Bulgarian prosecution to actively cooperate with European partners in connection with the current international situation and the challenges it poses to law enforcement authorities.

The acting Prosecutor General also spoke with his Hungarian counterpart, Dr. Gabor Nad, and accepted his invitation to visit Budapest in May this year – in response to the official visit to Sofia in November 2025 of the Hungarian Prosecutor General. During the meeting, the two pointed out the need for continuous improvement of the interaction between law enforcement institutions in the EU member states as key to limiting cross-border organized crime, especially in the sphere of illegal migration.

Borislav Sarafov also met with the head of the International Department of the Spanish Prosecutor's Office, Francisco Jimenez Villarejo, with whom they discussed specific criminal law cases related to Bulgarian citizens in Spain. The important role of judicial cooperation in dealing with today's increasingly global criminal environment was emphasized, and the high level of interaction between the Bulgarian and Spanish prosecutor's offices, including in joint investigations, was also highlighted.

The participants in the Consultative Forum also discussed the Eurojust Regulation with a view to its renewal, the prosecution announced yesterday. The agency's aspiration to establish itself as a trusted source for practical guidance on complex cases, judicial instruments and emerging types of crime, as well as the challenges of digitalization and artificial intelligence, are also the subject of discussions. 

In October 2025, the Fourth Forum of the Chief Prosecutors of the Balkan Countries was held in Sofia, with the participants uniting around the idea of creating a Permanent Balkan Prosecutors' Platform – with at least two meetings a year.
