DB notifies OFAC and the Prosecutor's Office following BIRD revelations
The “Democratic Bulgaria” (DB) coalition has taken decisive action following a document published by the investigative website BIRD. The matter concerns evidence presented before the Federal Court in the District of Columbia, in which Vasil Bozhkov claims that he made payments to Boyko Borisov and Vladislav Goranov in exchange for business benefits.
"In the document, the described conduct is viewed as bribery for the purposes of the applicable sanctions regime," stated the DB press office.
Key questions for OFAC
- Does OFAC consider it established that Bozhkov bribed Borisov for favorable treatment?
- Why is Vladislav Goranov sanctioned under “Magnitsky,” while no publicly comparable measure has been announced against Borisov?
- What criteria is the difference in the treatment of the two politicians based on?
Demand for an investigation by the Prosecutor's Office and SANS
DB insists that the acting Prosecutor General and the State Agency for National Security (SANS) conduct an immediate investigation into the information. The coalition asks:
- Will new pre-trial proceedings be initiated?
- Will the documents held by US authorities be officially requested?
- Will mechanisms for international legal cooperation be used?
Co-chairman of “Yes, Bulgaria” Ivaylo Mirchev called on Borisov to provide clear answers without political theater or to withdraw from public life, instead of talking about “uniting the right.”
