Orthodox believers in Bulgaria have entered the traditional Dormition Fast, which officially starts on August 1, 2025. The liturgical practice will continue until August 14 and includes intensive spiritual preparation for the upcoming significant Christian holidays.
On the first day of the fast, priests served a water blessing in numerous churches throughout the country. From August 1 to 13 inclusive, daily evening services with the Dormition Paraklesis will be held, aimed at deepening religious meditation.
The current fast is defined as stricter compared to the Peter and Nativity fasts. The specific canonical rules allow fish consumption only on the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, which is celebrated on August 6, or when this day coincides with Wednesday or Friday.
