Patient Safety in Aesthetic Dermatology is the Focus of the New Standard
Sofia, Bulgaria - Concern for the safety of patients undergoing aesthetic procedures, as well as the professional qualifications of doctors, stand out as the main goals of the new dermatological standard. This was stated by Dr. Mihail Mihaylov, a member of the Management Board of the Association of Aesthetic Dermatologists in Bulgaria, in an interview for the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency (BTA). Dr. Mihaylov took part in the three-day National Congress of Aesthetic Dermatology, an event with international participation.
Against the backdrop of the lively atmosphere of the congress, where experts from different countries exchanged experience, Dr. Mihaylov emphasized the importance of the new regulations. According to him, they reflect the growing need for standardization in the field of aesthetic dermatology.
The Desire for a "more fresh" Look as Motivation for Corrections
Dr. Mihaylov pointed out that the most frequent reasons why people turn to aesthetic corrections are related to their desire to look _q_fresher_, rested and confident. He noted that increasingly the goal is not only to change the appearance, but rather to achieve a feeling of well-being in one's own skin. Procedures aimed at slowing down the signs of aging, such as sagging skin, wrinkles and loss of volume, as well as corrections for scars and pigmentations, are among the most sought after.
Overcoming Complications: Early Recognition and Adequate Reaction
Dr. Mihaylov drew attention to the potential complications that may arise after aesthetic procedures. Bruising, swelling, inflammation or temporary asymmetry are most often observed. Less frequent, but more serious complications include vascular occlusions, infections and fibrosis. He emphasized the importance of qualified personnel, pointing out that only dermatologists and plastic surgeons possess the necessary knowledge and experience to recognize, control and treat these complications. This ensures significantly higher safety and security for patients.
The key to dealing with the resulting complications is their early recognition and adequate reaction. Various methods of treatment are applied, including enzyme preparations, anti-inflammatory agents, antibiotics or laser therapy, depending on the specific case. Dr. Mihaylov emphasized the importance of the doctor's experience, his specialization and the presence of a clear protocol for action. He noted that the Association of Aesthetic Dermatologists has developed a national protocol for dealing with complications, as well as a special board for consultations, to which members can turn when needed. This provides additional security for patients and support from the professional community.
The New Standard - a Guarantee for the Rights of Patients and Doctors
The new medical standard for skin and venereal diseases clearly establishes the rights and responsibilities of both patients and doctors. This is essential to ensure safety, professionalism and transparency in aesthetic practice. Thanks to the support of the Ministry of Health and the personal commitment of Minister Silvi Kirilov, Bulgaria has an updated standard that protects the interests of both parties. It explicitly states that only dermatologists and plastic surgeons are entitled to perform aesthetic procedures in the facial area, such as fillers, botulinum toxin, mesotherapy and other injection therapies, added Dr. Mihaylov.
How Patients Can Navigate the Choice of a Specialist
To ensure that patients receive adequate care, Dr. Mihaylov provided information on how they can check the doctor's qualifications. The right to practice medicine is acquired after registration with the Bulgarian Medical Association. Every doctor must be registered in the official register, which also states his/her specialty. The narrow specialty in skin and venereal diseases is acquired after a state exam and a certificate of specialty. Patients can check whether a doctor is a dermatologist through the register of the Bulgarian Medical Association. In addition, the names of all doctors who are members of the association and meet the professional standards for performing aesthetic procedures are published on the website of the Association of Aesthetic Dermatologists in Bulgaria, Dr. Mihaylov also pointed out.
