Unique intervention at UMBAL-Burgas
A team of 15 medical specialists performed a 12-hour operation at the Clinic of Vascular Surgery at UMBAL-Burgas. The doctors succeeded in reconstructing a lower jaw damaged by a tumor through a complex transplantation of bone and vessels from the pelvis.
The operation was more complex than a kidney transplant, shared Prof. Dr. Valentin Vasilev.
How did the complex procedure proceed?
- Hemimandibulectomy: Removal of the affected jaw and simultaneous replacement with bone tissue from the pelvis.
- Precision: Suturing the feeding vessels to the neck to ensure blood supply.
- Anesthesiological risk: Maintaining a 74-year-old patient with comorbidities for 12 hours is a true art.
Two weeks after the intervention, the patient is recovering successfully – she is speaking and eating normally.
