The Bulgarian State Railways are undertaking a large-scale financial transformation related to the introduction of dual currency designation on all transport documents. According to an official press center announcement, the change will cover paper tickets, electronic transport documents, and pricing information on the corporate website.
The transition period between January and February 2026 will provide exceptional flexibility for passengers. During this one-month interval, customers will be able to make payments in both Bulgarian levs and euros, with change being returned exclusively in euros for cash payments.
From February 1, 2026, the actual change takes effect - all cash payments for transport documents will be made exclusively in euros. Nevertheless, prices will continue to be displayed in parallel in both currencies.
The technical preparation of the system requires a temporary interruption of reservation services. Between 23:45 and 02:30 on August 8, 2025, ticket issuance will be suspended through all channels - cash desks, PDA devices, machines, and online platform.
During the system update, passengers will have an alternative option - purchasing tickets directly from transport personnel on trains. This option guarantees continuity of transport services.
The regulatory basis for the change is a legal requirement, according to which from tomorrow all prices in Bulgaria should be marked in euros as well. The regulatory period until October 8 provides tolerance for commercial entities regarding potential sanctions.
