A solemn celebration of the 146th anniversary of the creation of the Bulgarian Navy (VMF) was held in the historic city of Ruse, where key moments in the development of the Bulgarian maritime fleet were presented. The Sailor's Monument, located at 9 Odrin Street, became the epicenter of the celebrations, symbolizing the beginning of Bulgarian seafaring.
The ceremony included an official military ritual with the laying of wreaths and flowers by representatives of various institutions, non-governmental organizations, and citizens. The Commander of the Navy, Rear Admiral Kiril Mihaylov, delivered an emotional speech that highlighted the current challenges facing the fleet.
In his speech, Mihaylov emphasized the current geopolitical situation, noting that the war between Russia and Ukraine creates serious risks for maritime safety. "We are only 300 km from the military actions," he stressed, informing that since the beginning of the conflict, Bulgarian naval units have destroyed six floating mines and responded to over 80 signals of potential threats.
The Regional Governor of Ruse, Dragomir Draganov, described the combat ships as a "living organism" that protects national interests through their combat readiness and the professionalism of sailors and officers. Deputy Mayor Dimitar Nedev, for his part, emphasized the continuous mission of the fleet – protecting the state borders at sea.
As part of the celebrations, flowers were laid at the memorial plaque of Captain-Lieutenant Alexander Konkevich, the first commander of the Bulgarian Military Fleet and founder of the Naval School. This ceremony symbolically connected the past with the present of naval traditions.
The festive concert, which was held in front of the State Opera building in Ruse, was the culmination of the celebration. The Representative Brass Band of the Navy, which is celebrating its 141st anniversary this year, performed a diverse musical program, including marches, classical, rock, jazz, and pop compositions.
The event reinforced the significance of the Bulgarian Navy as an important factor in national security and a symbol of the country's patriotic spirit.
