Bulgaria activates a strategy for the development of water transport
A working meeting at the Ministry of Transport and Communications focused on increasing the competitiveness of Bulgarian sea and river ports. The main objective of the discussion was their integration into the strategic Middle Corridor, which is gaining increasing international importance.
"Our goal is a long-term plan, based on clear economic priorities, that will solidify Bulgaria's place on the transport map of Europe," stated Minister Georgi Peev.
Main challenges facing the sector:
- Infrastructure deficits: Insufficiently developed road and rail connectivity to port terminals.
- Regulatory framework: Need for updating outdated regulations.
- Management: Seeking a new management model for port facilities.
During the meeting, the issue of increased transit fees through the Bosphorus was also addressed. The government plans to bring the problem to the negotiating table with Turkey, emphasizing Bulgaria's strategic role as a transit partner for Turkish exports to Europe.
Next steps:
Within two weeks, industry organizations, including the Bulgarian Maritime Chamber and the Burgas Maritime Association, must submit their proposals regarding the most urgent problems. This data will form the basis of the future state strategy for the development of the sector.
