Heroic return from the front line
The Bulgarian ground forest firefighting module has successfully completed its mission in the Kingdom of Spain. The teams were transported back by a "Spartan" aircraft of the Bulgarian Air Force.
The firefighters were officially welcomed by the Director of the General Directorate for Fire Safety and Civil Protection, who expressed his appreciation for the efforts made in the fight against the fiery element.
Over the course of four weeks, two shifts of 20 Bulgarian firefighters each worked side by side with Spanish authorities, tackling numerous critical forest fires.
Participation in the Civil Protection Mechanism
The redeployment of the teams was carried out through the Union Civil Protection Mechanism. The large-scale operation to contain the fires involved:
- Dozens of local teams from the Spanish services;
- Specialized aviation, including several airplanes and helicopters;
- Trained Bulgarian ground firefighting personnel.
The mission is further proof of the professionalism of Bulgarian firefighters and their readiness to assist in large-scale disasters within the EU.
