A large-scale scientific study positioned Bulgaria among the leading countries in polar astronomy. On August 1, 2025, an expert team from three prestigious national institutions officially initiated a large-scale project to monitor solar dynamics.
A team from the Institute of Astronomy at BAS, the Technical University - Sofia, and the Nikolay Vaptsarov Naval Academy is expanding large-scale radio research on coronal mass ejections directly from the Livingston Island Antarctic base.
The chosen geographical location provides exceptional scientific advantages – an extremely low radio noise background that allows precise observations of plasma processes and cosmic radiation. Experts aim to improve the accuracy of solar storm forecasting.
The scientific expedition is planned to continue throughout the polar summer season, with forecasts indicating high solar activity specifically in 2025. The project is emerging as extremely promising for understanding cosmic processes.
