1109 years since the Battle of Achelous: Commemoration in honor of Tsar Simeon I

1109 years since the triumph of Tsar Simeon the Great at Achelous

August 20, 2026, marks 1109 years since one of the most memorable battles in Bulgarian history – the Battle of Achelous (917). It was then that the troops of Tsar Simeon I achieved a grand victory over Byzantium, changing the course of medieval history.

"A curious fact is that it was just before the Battle of Achelous that a blessing of the battle flags was performed for the first time in Bulgarian history, at the request of Tsar Simeon I."

Program of the celebrations in Achelous

• 19:00: Festive procession from the "Svetlina 1934" Community Center to the monument in the city park.
• Ritual: Requiem prayer for the fallen soldiers, a solemn speech, and laying of wreaths in front of the monument to Tsar Simeon the Great.
• 20:00: Musical program on the open stage featuring Trio Belcanto and folk singer Zhechka Slaninkova.

The Municipality of Pomorie and the Mayoralty of Achelous invite all residents and guests of the city to honor the memory of the heroes and celebrate the glorious anniversary together.
