Sofia will build 10 hectares of green infrastructure to combat air pollution. The "Green Measures for Cleaner Air" project is funded with over BGN 5.7 million from the Environment Program and will improve the quality of life for over 1,200,000 Sofia residents.

Sofia will acquire 10 hectares of new green infrastructure, thanks to a signed agreement between the Minister of Environment and Water, Manol Genov, and Mayor Vasil Terziev. The "Green Measures for Cleaner Air" project aims to improve air quality in Sofia by reducing fine particulate matter (PM10).

Measures are included to limit secondary dust and naturally purify the air by expanding green spaces. Plant species specifically chosen for their high capacity to capture PM10 will be planted. In addition to green spaces, the project also includes the construction of irrigation systems.

Over 1,200,000 Sofia residents are expected to feel the positive effects of the project. The investment is worth over BGN 5.7 million, provided by the Environment Program 2021-2027. The implementation period is 18 months.

With this initiative, Sofia aims to meet European and national air quality requirements and respond to the 2017 EU Court ruling on exceeding PM levels.
