The fourth consecutive night of protests in Los Angeles and other cities in the US against President Trump's policy of deporting illegal immigrants passed more calmly compared to previous days. Although the demonstrations continued in Los Angeles and at least nine other major cities, such as San Francisco, Houston, New York and Philadelphia, they were significantly smaller and less turbulent.

Despite the calming trend, the Los Angeles police still used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse protesters who had attacked a federal building. Several people were arrested. The protests followed President Trump's decision to send an additional 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles, in contradiction to the position of California Governor Gavin Newsom, and to use 700 Marines as well.

There were also protests in other cities such as Tampa, Florida and Boston, Massachusetts. In Austin, Texas, hundreds of people marched from the state Capitol building to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility, chanting "Down with ICE" and carrying signs with the message "No one is illegal". According to reports, they even occupied the building and barricaded themselves inside, with two people being arrested.

Among the protesters in Austin were people wearing Palestinian keffiyehs, which have become a prominent symbol of pro-Palestinian and anti-Israeli sentiments among the American and European left in recent months. They also waved Palestinian flags with the word "Free Palestine" depicted in a way that resembled blood drops.

The protests began on Friday evening in downtown Los Angeles and spread over the weekend to Paramount, a Latino city south of Los Angeles, and the neighboring Compton. They followed the arrests of immigrants by federal agents in several locations in Los Angeles. So far, over 100 immigrants have been arrested, and dozens more have been detained for participating in the unrest.

The events are unfolding against the backdrop of President Trump's promise during his election campaign and afterwards to deport a record number of illegal immigrants living in the US and to close the border with Mexico. He set a goal for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency to arrest at least 3,000 immigrants per day. According to the latest census, a large part of the residents of Los Angeles, which is run by Democrats, are Hispanic and foreign-born, but reports indicate that the tougher control measures ordered by Trump have also affected legal residents, including green card holders, leading to legal disputes.

Significant attention was also drawn to an incident recorded in Los Angeles, in which Australian journalist Lauren Tomas i from 9News was hit by a rubber bullet fired by the police against the protesters. The case prompted a reaction from Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who said the footage from the incident was "shocking" and that his government had raised the issue with the US administration. The journalist herself later tweeted that she was "a little injured, but okay" and that it was important to continue telling the stories that need to be told.
