In connection with the rising temperatures and the increasing risk of forest fires, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food (MAF) and the Executive Forest Agency (EFA) call on all citizens to exercise increased responsibility and strictly comply with fire safety measures when staying in the country's forest areas. The fire hazard season has already been declared across the country, and the control over the movement of vehicles, machinery, and people in the forests has been intensified.
The specialized teams for extinguishing forest fires in the forestry and hunting estates, as well as the vehicles for initial actions, are ready to assist the employees of the Fire Safety and Population Protection. According to data from the EFA, since the beginning of the year, 83 forest fires have been registered, affecting 4,600 hectares of forests.
It is reminded that during the fire hazard season, it is forbidden to light open fires within 100 meters of the boundaries of forest areas, as well as outside the designated and regulated areas for this purpose. Citizens are called upon to immediately call 112 if they notice a fire, as a quick response significantly reduces the scale of the damage.
Only in 2024, 595 fires were registered in the country's forest areas, covering over 170,000 hectares, of which 14,624 hectares were completely destroyed by crown fires. Last year was extremely difficult in terms of fighting the fire element, both for the participants in the extinguishing activities and for the residents of the affected settlements. The direct losses from forest fires - timber, seedlings, and forest infrastructure - are large, but the most severe consequences are for ecosystems, wildlife populations, the natural landscape, and people's livelihoods.
The protection of Bulgarian forests is a shared responsibility. The call is for increased vigilance and prevention of negligence, which can have serious consequences for nature, people, and the future.
