Students from the German High School in Burgas conducted a study on the carbon footprint of their school for 2024 and proposed measures to reduce emissions, including insulation of the building and construction of an urban greenhouse. The municipality has prepared an energy efficiency project for the high school, which is expected to lead to a significant reduction in the carbon footprint.

The final meeting of the joint campaign "Our Planet, Our Climate" between the Wind of Change organizations and the Environment Program 2021-2027 was recently held. The event was online, so that participants from different cities could present the results of the study on the carbon footprint of their schools.

Students from 9th grade at the German Gymnasium "Goethe" in Burgas, under the guidance of their teachers, studied the school's carbon footprint for 2024. The analysis showed that it amounts to 159.2 tons of carbon dioxide emitted, with the largest share of 43.4% being due to the heating of the building.

To reduce this main source of emissions, the students proposed measures such as insulating the building, insulating the walls, and replacing the windows. The Municipality of Burgas has already prepared an integrated project under the Regional Development Program 2021-2027, which includes energy efficiency at the German Gymnasium and the construction of an urban greenhouse in the school yard.

The implementation of these measures is expected to lead to a significant reduction in the school's carbon footprint. Scientists recommend that each person strive for an annual footprint of around 2 tons of CO2 to achieve climate neutrality and limit global warming to 1.5°C.
