The Federal Agency for Internal Security (DHS) reported that officers from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and their federal partners were attacked by an illegal immigrant while executing a warrant on Wednesday at a meat processing plant in Omaha, Nebraska.
During the raid, ICE detained over 70 illegal immigrants, some of whom had local arrest warrants, previous convictions for driving under the influence, or had been previously deported, the agency said.
"Yesterday, an illegal immigrant from Honduras brandished a weapon and attacked federal agents and officers who were doing their job: protecting American citizens, communities, and businesses victimized by identity theft," said Acting ICE Director Todd Hoffman on Wednesday.
Many of the 70 individuals detained on Wednesday may now face additional federal charges, including fraud and misuse of visas, permits and other documents; assault on a federal officer; resisting arrest; illegal re-entry; and/or abuse of Social Security numbers, ICE said.
"Our ICE agents and officers - along with our federal partners - risk their lives daily to protect the American public. They don't want praise. They want support," said Special Agent in Charge Mark Ziito of the ICE Homeland Security Investigations office in Kansas City in a statement.
The operation was a multi-agency initiative involving ICE Homeland Security Investigations and Enforcement and Removal Operations in Omaha; the Office of the Inspector General for Homeland Security; the Department of Justice; the FBI; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; the Drug Enforcement Administration; the U.S. Marshals Service; IRS Criminal Investigation; the Nebraska State Patrol; U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services; and the Fraud Division of the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles.
