BP starts exporting liquefied natural gas from GTA project in Africa

BP has started exporting liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the African GTA project, located off the coast of Mauritania and Senegal. The first delivery was carried out using a floating liquefaction platform (FLNG).

British energy company BP has made its first delivery of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) project, located off the coast of Mauritania and Senegal. A floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) platform has loaded the first LNG tanker.

The GTA FPSO facility, positioned about 40 km offshore, purifies the gas from water, condensate, and other impurities before transporting it to the FLNG platform, located 10 km offshore. There, the gas is cryogenically cooled, liquefied, and stored before being loaded onto gas carriers. The GTA field itself is about 120 km from the coastline, on the border between the two African countries.

The GTA project is among the deepest offshore developments in Africa, with gas production taking place from a depth of up to 2850 meters. The governments of Mauritania and Senegal have designated GTA as a project of strategic national importance. According to BP, after its full commissioning, the first phase of the project will produce about 2.4 million tons of LNG per year. This is BP's third major project scheduled to launch in 2025, part of the company's strategy to increase natural gas production.
