On May 24, the Day of the Holy Brothers Cyril and Methodius, Minister Georgiev arrived in the city of Taraclia, Moldova, to participate in the solemn ceremony of opening a branch of the Ruse University. Together with his Moldovan counterpart Mihail Popsoi, he laid flowers at the memorial plaque of the creators of the Bulgarian alphabet and attended the festive events.
In his greeting to the Bulgarian community, Minister Georgiev emphasized that this is a historic day for Taraclia and for Bulgarians in Moldova, as the new university opens the doors to quality higher education in line with European standards. He expressed confidence that the branch will contribute to the establishment of Taraclia's role as a cultural and spiritual center of Bulgarian identity in Moldova.
The process of transforming the Taraclia State University "Grigory Tsamblak" into a branch of the Ruse University "Angel Kanchev" began in 2024 with the approval of the Moldovan authorities. The registration of the new educational institution under the current Moldovan legislation was successfully carried out on April 2, 2025. This is seen as a strong testimony to the progress of Moldova's European integration and the improvement of the conditions for the realization of the ethno-cultural rights of the Bulgarian minority, especially in the field of education.
During his visit, Minister Georgiev also met with representatives of the local administration and mayors of settlements in the Taraclia district with a predominant Bulgarian population. They discussed key aspects of cooperation with Bulgaria and support for the implementation of socially significant projects for the Bulgarian minority. The city of Taraclia is the administrative center of a district where Bulgarians make up 66.1% of the total population.
The opened branch of the Ruse University in Taraclia is the first Bulgarian higher education institution outside the country's borders, which will provide access to quality European education to an increasing number of young people from the Bulgarian minority in Moldova.
