The cultural heritage of the Burgas region comes to life in the archaeological exhibition, which has been preserving and presenting exceptional evidence of local history for more than a century. Created in 1912 as a private initiative, the museum structure is now located in the building of the former girls' high school and offers a comprehensive view of different historical eras.
The systematic enrichment of the collection includes remarkable finds from ancient settlements such as Pomorie, Nessebar, and Sozopol. Among the most attractive exhibits are: a marble statue from Atia – the first known example of a round sculpture on Bulgarian territory, a Roman inscription from Panichevo village, and an extremely rare bronze ingot.
The time span of the exhibition is extremely wide, covering periods from prehistory to the late Middle Ages. Visitors can trace the development of human civilization through clay idols, architectural elements, coins, and religious images from different eras.
A key highlight of the museum collection is the "Vault" hall, which presents a rich numismatic collection with coins from various historical periods – from pre-monetary forms to Ottoman specimens. Particular attention is drawn to a medieval treasure, whose original is preserved in the famous Hermitage.
The museum's international recognition is confirmed by its participation in prestigious world exhibitions. In October 2024, three exceptional artifacts were presented at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, demonstrating the significance of Burgas archaeological collections.
The museum's research activities continue actively. Regular field studies at sites such as Rusokastro and Deultum expand knowledge of regional history. New exhibitions, such as the "Late Medieval Clay Pipes" exhibition, opened on April 1, 2025, continue to enrich the museum collection.
With over 15,000 movable cultural valuables, the exhibition is not just a museum space, but a dynamic scientific center. It successfully preserves and promotes the rich cultural and historical heritage of the Burgas region, becoming a true chronicle of human civilization.
The museum continues to be a living testimony to the centuries-old history of this region, with each exhibit telling its unique story and contributing to the understanding of cultural development from the Bronze Age to the Ottoman rule.
