The territory of the "Boatin" reserve was declared a protected area in 1948 in order to preserve the centuries-old beech forests in the region. Over the years, the reserve has been expanded and today it covers nearly 1600 hectares in the western part of the Central Stara Planina mountain. It occupies the northern slopes below the peak of Tetevenska Baba and includes the basin of the Cherni Vit river, which is characterized by a rugged and steep relief.
The forest landscapes in "Boatin" are dominated by the old, tall beech trees, some of which are more than two centuries old. Only in the highest parts of the mountain are there spruce forests, forming the upper boundary of the reserve, while in the open ridge areas there are dwarf pine communities.
The rich biodiversity of "Boatin" includes about 550-600 species of higher plants, including many endemics and endangered species listed in the Red Book of Bulgaria. The bird world is also exceptionally diverse, with dozens of species of songbirds, woodpeckers and owls, including the Ural owl, which was first established in the country.
