Literature comes to life: National reading event with the "Literature in the Present Tense" campaign
On May 11, the Day of the Holy Brothers Cyril and Methodius, six Bulgarian cities will become the stage for a large-scale initiative to promote reading among young people. Students from Sofia, Shumen, Varna, Stara Zagora, Dobrich, and Pleven will present contemporary Bulgarian literature at the BTA press clubs.
"Literature that is contemporary speaks about the problems of the world, ecology, and artificial intelligence. This is the way to win children over as readers," says Prof. Amelia Licheva, Dean of the Faculty of Slavic Studies at Sofia University.
Why literature is not a museum?
- Active dialogue: Overcoming the gap between classical texts and the experiences of modern students.
- Modern formats: Using educational programs that place 20th and 21st-century literature in the context of today.
- Partnerships: Joining the efforts of Sofia University, BTA, libraries, and publishers like Storytel.

The initiative is a logical continuation of the "Literature is not a museum" project, which has already reached over 420,000 people through exhibitions and discussions. The main goal remains a radical change in literature education to meet the needs of the 21st century and to preserve children's interest in reading.
