A conference was held in Burgas with representatives from EU member states, partners, EU agencies and institutions to explore the practical benefits, challenges and future potential of land and coastal surveillance with drones. Deputy Minister of Interior Lyubomir Yosifov expressed gratitude to Frontex for all the support that is tailored to the operational needs of Bulgaria. Agency Permanent Corps staff are deployed along the Bulgarian borders as part of the joint operation "Bulgaria 2025", and Frontex's presence on the Bulgarian-Turkish border has tripled, contributing to a lasting reduction in migration pressure.
Plamen Stamboliev, Head of the Border Surveillance Department at the General Directorate of Border Police, emphasized that unmanned systems offer unique capabilities such as rapid deployment, mobility, minimal maintenance requirements and operation in harsh conditions - exactly what field officers need. The tactical drones provided for testing are equipped with advanced surveillance and communication systems and can improve situational awareness and help detect cross-border crime in real time.
During the conference, a specialized seminar on tactical border surveillance using unmanned aerial systems was held. Participants exchanged experience and best practices related to the use of drones in real-world conditions. A practical scenario was played out in which the drone "detects" illegal migrants and smugglers in the area of the village of Zidarovo, and the Special Tactical Actions officers of the Elhovo Regional Border Police Directorate immediately move to the exact location and detain the offenders.
