"Dirty Rain" in Burgas: Atmospheric Phenomenon or Alarming Signal?

In the evening of May 16, 2025, a so-called “dirty rain” fell over Burgas — precipitation containing particles of sand and dust. The cause is the transport of dust masses from North Africa, particularly the Sahara region. Strong winds lift the sand into the atmosphere, where it enters clouds and returns to Earth as rain. In recent years, such rainfall has been increasingly observed in Southern and Eastern Europe.

Experts warn that these events may pose potential risks. Beyond the seemingly harmless dust, the rain can contain microplastics, heavy metals, and other pollutants carried over long distances. This raises concerns about potential effects on human health and the environment.

The Burgas municipality has issued recommendations to residents:

– avoid going outside during such rainfall if possible;
– do not leave food or drinks outdoors;
– avoid contact with rainwater, especially for children and allergy sufferers;
– thoroughly clean surfaces where dust has settled.
Residents have been sharing photos on social media: cars, balconies, and streets appear as if struck by a sandstorm. For many, this is a first-time experience, though such phenomena are no longer rare in the region.

These weather patterns are becoming part of climate reality. The increased frequency of dirty rain is linked to global atmospheric changes, more frequent dust storms, and disrupted weather cycles.
