Metropolitan Hilarion detained in Czech Republic: containers with "white substance" found in his car

The former head of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, Metropolitan "Hilarion (Alfeyev)", was detained in the Czech Republic on Sunday, May 24, following a search of his vehicle on the road from "Karlovy Vary". In the trunk of the car, "four small containers with a white substance" were found, reports the metropolitan's Telegram channel in an anonymous post, which clarifies that Hilarion himself "does not have the opportunity to personally address the channel's subscribers".

A little later, the information about the detention of a vehicle in the "Karlovy Vary" region was confirmed by the Czech National Drug Control Center. According to the Czech authorities, it involves actions based on an anonymous tip about the possible transport of narcotic and psychotropic substances.

Czech police: the search was based on an anonymous tip

The spokesperson for the Czech National Drug Control Center, "Lucie Šmoldasová", states that law enforcement acted based on preliminary information: "I can confirm that, based on an anonymous report about the transport of drugs and psychotropic substances, we took measures against a vehicle in the Central Bohemia region". She emphasizes that the police cannot name the detainees "due to ongoing criminal proceedings".

According to the Czech publication "Novinky.cz", Metropolitan Hilarion was detained in the town of "Unhošť" (district of "Kladno") in the Central Bohemian Region. The prosecutor's office in "Kladno" points out that no official charges have been filed at this moment, and two individuals have been detained and are being questioned.

More than six hours of questioning and claims of provocation

According to the message on the metropolitan's Telegram channel, Hilarion was questioned for more than six hours. The text states that he "categorically rejects any involvement in the illegal possession of prohibited substances" and defines the event as a "provocation".

According to his Czech lawyer, cited in the same message, the metropolitan was not present during the vehicle search, and the police officers "immediately headed to the trunk – as if they knew in advance where to look". This detail is used by his team as an argument in support of the version of a pre-planned planting of the substance.

Previous "period of pressure" and anonymous threats

The initial message on the channel also claims that the detention was preceded by a "prolonged period of pressure on Metropolitan Hilarion and the Orthodox community in Karlovy Vary". According to the publication, he "repeatedly received anonymous threats, including threats of physical violence, with demands to leave the place of his ministry". No concrete evidence of these threats is provided, but they are presented as a background to what happened.

On Monday evening, a new message appeared on Hilarion's channel, according to which he will likely remain in custody for at least one more night, as no procedural decision on the case will be made that day.

Comments: "persona non grata" in the Czech Republic?

Protodeacon "Andrei Kuraev" (designated as a "foreign agent" in Russia) commented on his blog that the detention could be seen as "a persistent explanation to Hilarion that the Czech Republic considers him persona non grata". According to him, the Czech authorities might actually be using criminal-legal mechanisms to show their unwillingness for him to reside in the country.

"Since he has a European (Hungarian) passport, they cannot just expel him. But they can treat him in a Russian way," writes Kuraev, hinting that the detention and prolonged procedural actions could be a tool for indirect displacement without a formal deportation procedure.

The metropolitan's status: European citizenship and property

In 2024, the publication "Novaya Gazeta Europe" published an investigation according to which Metropolitan Hilarion possesses Hungarian citizenship and luxury real estate in Europe, including a castle. This information has not been officially refuted and is used by his critics as proof of his special status – as a high-ranking Orthodox hierarch integrated into the European space as well.

The possession of a European passport also has legal consequences: the metropolitan enjoys freedom of movement within the EU and cannot be easily expelled through purely administrative orders. This makes any criminal proceeding against him even more sensitive, both for the Czech authorities and for the Russian Orthodox Church and Russian diplomacy.

What follows: investigation, political context, and reputational risk

At the moment, the Czech prosecutor's office in "Kladno" has not filed official charges, and the case is in the stage of questioning the detainees and analyzing the seized substance. If the expert examination confirms that it is a narcotic or psychotropic substance, the next step would be to assess whether to press charges and against whom specifically.

The case has already gained international resonance – not only because of Metropolitan Hilarion's high rank in the hierarchy of the ROC, but also because of the tense relations between Russia and the EU countries. In Moscow, the detention will likely be interpreted as a hostile act, and the version of a "provocation" may be actively used in official rhetoric.

For the Czech authorities, the case is a test of the independence and transparency of the investigation in a situation where criminal-legal and political dimensions are intertwined. For Metropolitan Hilarion – it is a blow to his reputation, which, regardless of the outcome of the case, will leave a lasting mark both on his public image and on his positions within the church and international environment.
