On June 10, at the NHK Cultural Center in Burgas, a public lecture titled "Identity in Korean Art" will be held. The event is part of the summer program of the Burgas branch of SU and the Faculty of Classical and New Philologies and will be led by Dr. Beatrix Mecsi - a renowned art historian and lecturer at ELTE University, Budapest.
The lecture will offer an opportunity to explore the over a thousand-year-old artistic tradition of Korea, combining antiquity and modernity. Dr. Mecsi, Ph.D. in Art History from SOAS, University of London and Head of the Department of Korean Studies at ELTE University, will focus the attention on the question: What makes Korean art distinctive and original, even in the context of strong external influences?
Through the prism of architecture, sculpture, painting, and fine ceramics, the cultural and aesthetic transformations that Korean artists have experienced from antiquity to the present will be traced. The lecture will examine the ways in which Korean art fits into or opposes global aesthetic trends.
Dr. Mecsi is the recipient of the prestigious Golden Medal Pro Scientia of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the author of publications in international scientific journals dedicated to East Asian visual culture and the text-image connection in art.
The event is free of charge and is aimed at a wide audience - both art and history enthusiasts, as well as the curious who are just beginning to discover Korea. The lecture will be held in English, and pre-registration is recommended for participation.
