Minister Zhecho Stankov participated in a discussion on European efforts to achieve zero emissions, together with colleagues from Norway, Switzerland, Belgium and the Netherlands. He emphasized that Bulgaria is among the countries with the most carbon-intensive energy systems in Europe, which is why carbon capture and storage (CCUS) technologies are vital for protecting industry and jobs.
According to Stankov, CCUS is not only a tool for achieving climate goals, but also a symbol of transformation - "a bridge between industrial heritage and green leadership". Bulgaria is pursuing a comprehensive policy for energy transition, based on innovation and social responsibility. The country has created a stable legal and strategic framework, ensuring long-term predictability for business.
The Minister emphasized Bulgaria's ambition to become an energy balancer in the Balkan region. The government is investing in large-scale energy storage batteries and in the modernization of hydropower potential through new PSHP projects. These facilities will provide flexibility and security to the electricity system.
Alongside industrial efforts, Bulgaria is pursuing a consistent policy on energy efficiency. Hundreds of thousands of households have already benefited from state programs for building renovation, fully funded by public resources. Thus, the country combines climate responsibility with the fight against energy poverty.
In conclusion, Minister Stankov stated that the Bulgarian energy transition is part of the overall effort for regional and European transformation. Cooperation with neighbors, the development of green energy corridors, and shared investments will be the foundation for a more sustainable, innovative and socially just energy future.
