Police and customs officers found marijuana hidden under the hybrid battery of a car heading for Turkey at the Kapitan Andreevo border crossing. Two men have been detained.

Bulgaria's organised crime unit (GDBOP) and the Customs Agency carried out the joint operation on 18 October 2026. The car was in the outgoing lane for cars and buses, driving towards Turkey. The driver is a Bulgarian citizen. Officers sent the car for a customs check.

They removed the hybrid battery from the boot, behind the rear seats, and found a purpose-built hiding place in a metal container under it. Inside were clear plastic packages of dry green leafy matter. A field drug test showed marijuana, and officers seized the packages.

The marijuana weighs 4,560 grams gross and is worth more than €37,300.

Police detained the driver and his helper as accomplices. Both are charged under Article 242, paragraph 2, in conjunction with Article 20 and Article 18, paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code.

The Haskovo District Prosecutor's Office is supervising the pre-trial proceedings.
