The annual Danube Day draws attention to one of the most significant European rivers, uniting 14 countries and 81 million people in a joint campaign to protect the water ecosystem and natural heritage.

The international community marks a special day dedicated to the Danube River, traditionally held on June 29 - the date of the historical Convention for the Protection of the River. This year's edition carries the impressive message "Our Danube - Our Future", emphasizing the importance of the water basin for European communities.

The geographical scope of the river is extremely impressive - it passes through 14 countries, including Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova, and Ukraine. The Danube watershed covers an enormous territory of 817,000 square kilometers, encompassing 120 main tributaries and connecting nearly 81 million people along its 2,859-kilometer length.

The ecological significance of the river is undisputed - it represents an incredibly diverse biological corridor with unique ecosystems and habitats. The campaign aims to motivate local communities towards active participation in preserving the water environment and its biological diversity.

The International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River coordinates large-scale initiatives, among which the traditional children's competition Danube Art Master stands out. The contest encourages students between 6 and 18 years old to explore local river ecosystems and create artistic works that represent their understanding of nature.

In Bulgaria, the Ministry of Environment and Water, together with the Danube River Basin Directorate, organizes various events - from ecological cleanups to information campaigns and city celebrations along the river.

The historical context of the initiative dates back to June 29, 1994, when the Convention on Cooperation for the Protection of the Danube River was signed in Sofia. The first official marking of Danube Day took place ten years later - in 2004.

Official information about the events can be found on the specialized website http://www.danubeday.org/, which provides detailed data on international initiatives and local events.

Through this large-scale campaign, the countries of the Danube region demonstrate unity around a common ecological cause, transcending political and national borders.
