The Bulgarian State Railways (BDZ) will acquire 35 new electric multiple units manufactured by Alstom, following the signing of a contract with the Ministry of Transport. Each train will offer 351 seats, including 51 first-class seats, distributed in 6 cars, providing comfort and safety when traveling, especially on long distances. The contract also includes 15 years of maintenance with an option for extension.
Minister Grozdan Karadjov shared his emotional reaction, noting that reaching this deal was difficult but made possible thanks to the assistance of the European Commission. The contract is the result of many difficulties, including canceled public procurements and lawsuits. The agreement with the EC provides for 12 of the trains to be delivered by August 2026, within the framework of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP), and BGN 363 million will be used for their financing. The remaining trains will be financed with BGN 696 million from another European instrument.
This is the second deal for new trains under the RRP, the first being for 25 long-distance trains. With these two acquisitions, BDZ will cover about two-thirds of its needs for new rolling stock. Alstom guarantees the quality and reliability of the trains, stating that it has already put more than 4,000 similar models into operation. Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov emphasized that despite the success achieved, it is necessary to develop a clear model for the functioning of the railways in the conditions of an open market.
