On its 10th anniversary, the Bulgarian Hospital Association (BHA) hosted a roundtable where it presented 10 strategic ideas for improving Bulgaria's healthcare system. Key among them is increasing health contributions or introducing additional insurance.
The event was attended by Vice President Iliana Yotova, Health Minister Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sylvi Kirilov, MPs from the Health Committee, and representatives from all hospital organizations.
Deputy chair Andrey Markov noted that current healthcare funds do not meet growing demands. Arkadi Sharkov from the Institute for Market Economics added that aging populations and economic pressure are challenges across Europe.
Prof. Grigor Dimitrov from NHIF described the system as inefficient, lacking public trust, and over-reliant on patient co-payments.
Other priorities include: solving the shortage of healthcare professionals, improving access in small towns, adopting AI and cybersecurity standards, and developing electronic health services.
All proposals will be officially submitted to relevant institutions.
