The death toll from the Russian air strike on a school in the village of Komyshuvakha, in Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region, has risen to 55, Ukraine's State Emergency Service (SES) said on Saturday, November 7. On the evening of November 6, rescuers had reported 53 dead after pulling the bodies of three more people from the rubble.

In the past 24 hours, teams have recovered the bodies and remains of nine more people. The search is not over.

How it began: Russian air strikes on a school handing out aid in Komyshuvakha kill 26 people

The attack came on Monday, November 2. Russian forces carried out a series of strikes on the school, where local people were collecting humanitarian aid. After the first strike, they hit a shelter where people were hiding. That same evening, the SES reported 26 dead.

The dead include civilians, rescuers and police officers who came to help the injured.

SES rescuers and dog handlers are clearing collapsed structures and searching the area for bodies. They are working in difficult conditions and under constant risk of new strikes.
