Russian air strikes on a school in the village of Komyshuvakha, in Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region, killed 26 people on 2 November, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES) said in the evening. The dead include two rescuers and four police officers. Five people were wounded, two of them SES staff.

Aid was handed out at the school every week to local residents who had stayed in the village.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said most of the dead were civilians who had come for aid, and people who came to help them after the first strike.

The two rescuers who died were Denys Konovalenko and Oleksiy Sushchevsky, both 44. SES chief Andriy Danyk said Konovalenko had worked in civil protection for almost 12 years. Sushchevsky had been a rescuer since 2013 and spent more than 13 years in fire and rescue units in Zaporizhzhia.

"They went out every day to help people, worked in dangerous conditions and risked their lives to save others," Danyk said.
