Work begins on the first stage of rebuilding the upper part of Aleksandrovska Street in Burgas, the city council said. It covers the stretch between Vasil Levski and Probuda streets.
The street will change completely so it can become a pedestrian zone. The water pipes and sewers will be replaced.
Plans include tactile strips for people with poor sight, rest areas and new lighting. The design will follow that of the city's other main streets. The council does not plan to remove any trees.
The asphalt is broken up by many water and sewer repairs, the pavements are warped and the tiles are smashed, the council says. It says it has been ready to start work for a long time.
The repair has been long awaited, but the first plan was halted and redrawn after people held conflicting views on how the street should look.
The work is split into two stages. The first is expected to finish by next spring. The second will start after the Eurovision Song Contest, which Burgas will host.
