One of the biggest freezes on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast was during the winter of 1928-29. In Burgas Bay, the sea froze twice - in 1929 and again in 1954. The freezing of seawater is due to the harsh meteorological conditions that took over the Old Continent.
Sea froze, as did some of the largest European rivers, and thousands of ships were blocked by the ice. In Burgas Bay, the ice cover was so thick (over 15 cm in some places) that some of the bravest Burgas residents went for walks with carts and phaetons to the island of "St. Anastasia", Pomorie and Sozopol. Sliding on the frozen sea and walks with parents to the end of the old bridge or around the lighthouse were an unforgettable experience for the children. The lake at the Old Railway Station turned into an improvised ice rink, where the children gathered to skate.
Then, freezing of the water was observed along the entire coast, not just in the ports. The ice melts after March 8th.
