Driver detained after attempt to illegally transport migrants through Lesovo border checkpoint

A driver was detained last night at the Lesovo border checkpoint after attempting to transport illegal migrants across the Bulgarian border. The incident occurred during an attempt to enter the country.

According to information from the border authorities, a truck with a trailer, driven by a Turkish citizen, arrived at the checkpoint. Initially, a check of the cargo with a gas analyzer was not possible. Therefore, Border Police officers decided to conduct a thorough inspection of the cargo hold.

During the thorough inspection, border police officers and customs officials found a total of 17 illegal migrants without identification documents. Among them were two women and 15 men. According to the information provided, they are citizens of Iraq.

The driver of the truck was detained immediately. He is accused of assisting foreigners in crossing into the country in violation of the law, using a motor vehicle. This constitutes a crime under Article 280 of the Penal Code. The foreigners found in the truck have been detained for illegal entry across the Bulgarian-Turkish border, which is a crime under Article 279 of the Penal Code.

The competent authorities continue to work on the case. The investigation is underway, and all the circumstances surrounding the incident are expected to be clarified.
