Scratched euro banknotes are not compensated, warns the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB).

During a briefing at the Coordination Center for the Euro Mechanism, the chief cashier Stefan Tsvetkov explained that according to the requirements of the European Central Bank (ECB), intentionally damaged banknotes are retained and are not compensated.

Tsvetkov called on traders not to accept such banknotes and for citizens to show respect for the monetary circulation. If a scratched banknote is presented at the BNB's cash registers, it will be retained.

If there is suspicion of a counterfeit banknote, it must be handed over to the law enforcement authorities.
