Drivers should drive with increased caution, appropriate speed, and be prepared for winter conditions, reminds the Road Infrastructure Agency (API).
Meteorologists' forecasts predict a drop in temperatures, with rain likely to turn into snow on Christmas Eve and Christmas in Northwestern and Northern Bulgaria. Road administrations and road maintenance companies continuously monitor synoptic analyses and take actions to treat road surfaces against slipperiness and icing.
The priority is the motorways, the busiest routes of the first-class and second-class road network and the passes, providing links between Northern and Southern Bulgaria.
Restrictions on the movement of heavy goods vehicles:
- December 30: 2:00 PM - 8:00 PM (for vehicles leaving Sofia)
- January 4, 2026: 12:00 PM - 8:00 PM (for vehicles traveling to Sofia)
The restrictions do not apply to those performing public passenger transport. On the Hemus and Struma motorways, there are exceptions for vehicles over 12 tons carrying dangerous goods, live animals, perishable foods, and goods under temperature control and garbage trucks.
In the Blagoevgrad region today, between 10:00 AM and 8:00 PM, reversible traffic has been introduced in the section of road I-1/E-79 Sofia - Kulata, at the junction with the Struma motorway and the Simitli road junction.
Around 100,000 cars are expected to leave Sofia for the upcoming holidays, with the busiest traffic expected to be on the Trakia motorway.
