Varna Jail Guard Detained for Bribery and Smuggling in Prison

A 43-year-old employee of the pre-trial detention center in Varna has been detained on charges of soliciting and accepting a bribe. He took 2000 leva to smuggle in mobile phones.

The Varna Regional Court has detained in custody the 43-year-old employee of the Investigative Detention Center in the city, who is accused of soliciting and accepting a bribe and of a crime of office, the Appellate Prosecutor's Office announced.

The man was detained on November 19. The investigation has been underway since August this year. According to the indictment, he demanded and took a bribe of 2,000 leva to smuggle prohibited items into the detention center – two mobile phones.

According to the court, if at liberty, the accused could commit another crime, as data on a prolonged period of criminal activity has been collected during the investigation. The work on documenting and proving it continues under the direction of the Regional Prosecutor's Office in Varna.

The court's ruling is subject to appeal control by the Appellate Court in the coastal city.
